The old oak is darkened to almost black and the single board top is paneled on top of that to create a double thick top and massive weight.  The ends are framed with deep moldings around the wrought iron handles.  Both handles are intact and have a decorative twist to the bale and back plates.  The unique lock inside is now working, with the key that comes with this piece thanks to the labors of our lock expert who had never seen a lock quite like this one.  The decorative cutouts on the front are very unique.  A paper label on the back of the chest offers only a slight clue to the age and origins of the piece.  We did add a lid support for this piece.  Otherwise, the character of this chest is something you either love or not.  Perhaps an emigrant's Chest that made it to California.
