Oak Wagon Wheel Fretwork
(inventory # UTC-fret)

Decorative architectural elements were used inside Victorian style houses to add more interest to areas over doorways or windows.  Oak ones like this are prized for their distinctive designs.  This one features a central "Wagon wheel" with an additional twist that makes it look like it's spinning.  Stick and Ball work is used as filler and various height spindles offset the pattern on either side of the long curls.  A stick and ball border frames the whole piece.  Compare vintage pieces to the newer reproductions and you will find closer patterns, and a lot more intricacy of design in general.  In older finish, with some wood shrinkage.
